Senator vows to cover more students under free college law
MANILA – Senator Bam Aquino on Friday vowed to expand the coverage of college students

benefiting from the free tertiary education law under the proposed 2026 national budget.
Aquino, principal author of Republic Act (RA) 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, also assured that the 3.5 million beneficiaries would continue receiving government support.
“We will push for more scholarships and ito pong 3.5 million students na may suporta sa gobyerno, we will do our best na itaas pa ito (We will push for more scholarships and for these 3.5 million students already supported by the government, we will do our best to further increase this number),” Aquino said during the budget hearing of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The senator said about 2.2 million students enrolled in SUCs and LUCs are currently covered by the law, while 1.3 million students in private universities receive support through the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) and the Tulong Dunong Program (TDP).
Aquino urged CHED to publish a clear schedule of scholarships and the target number of beneficiaries to help the Senate monitor and properly allocate funds for the program’s continued implementation.
He also called on the agency to simplify the guidelines for TES and TDP to accommodate more students from low-income and near-poor families.
“Iyong mga nasa poverty or slightly above the poverty line, kailangan pa rin ng tulong. Marami pong nangangailangan (Those who are living in poverty or slightly above it still need help. There are still many who are in need),” Aquino said. (PNA)
