PNP welcomes Sara Duterte to visit HQ, see quick response ops

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has invited Vice President Sara Duterte to its headquarters to show her how important the deployment of policemen is as part of their quick response operations.
This invitation came after Duterte criticized the PNP for its intensified police visibility measures rather than maximizing modern technology.
At a briefing on Friday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro was asked for Malacañang’s comment on Duterte’s remarks, but she instead read a reaction statement from PNP Chief, Police General Nicolas Torre III.
“We appreciate the Vice President’s insight on how we, the PNP, should do our policing so we can be there whenever we are needed by the community. First, we have already incorporated technologies such as drones and CCTVs in our operations. These have enabled us to build a strong foundation for our quick response,” she said, quoting Torre.
“Second, the Vice President is welcome to come and visit us, and we are more than happy to show her how important the deployment of our policemen in key areas in our quick response team,” she continued.
Castro added that the PNP respects everyone’s opinions and is open to listening to those that are “credible and make sense.”
“So, according to our PNP Chief, let’s listen to the opinions of people who make sense,” Castro said.
Duterte made the criticism during a media interview in Pampanga on Wednesday, describing the increased police visibility measure as old school.
“CCTVs don’t get tired. So if your CCTV runs 24 hours, why are you still putting police officers there when they can’t even chase down all those [criminals],” she said.
“So what you should be thinking about is how to modernize and leverage the available technology to improve the Philippine National Police. We’re still stuck in the 1980s, 1970s mindset of having police patrol the streets,” Duterte added. /mr
