PBBM cites the role of a free press for a vibrant, functioning PH democracy
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday reiterated his administration’s continuous recognition of “the invaluable role of a free press and a robust media in ensuring a vibrant and functioning Philippine democracy.”
The President made the remark during the oath-taking of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Philippine Journalists–Samahang Plaridel Foundation Inc. in Malacañang.
“For one, you help keep our people informed of important news and current events, ensuring that there is a healthy and enlightened, and meaningful discourse on matters of public importance,” President Marcos said.
“You likewise help in holding public officers, including myself, accountable for our actions—recognizing our work when we do well, and pointing out our shortcomings whenever our work does not measure up to our sworn duties,” he added.
The President assured support for the Philippine media by ensuring their safety and welfare as they go about their jobs, through the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS).
The protection involves the creation of the Media Safety Vanguards (MSV), operation of a 24/7 hotline number, and provision of legal support.
“We will also foster an environment where members of the media can continue to freely practice their profession in a manner that is fruitful, rewarding, and meaningful,” Marcos said.
“Let us continue to work together in nurturing a truly free and safe environment for all media personnel toward a Bagong Pilipinas that we dream of in the years ahead,” he added.
Earlier this year, President Marcos said during the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) 50th Anniversary Presidential Forum, the “principal role of the press is not to applaud those who govern” but to hold them accountable, “without holding back in giving praise to those who deserve it.” PND
