Palace asks: ‘Understanding, trust’ in efforts to help transport sector

MANILA, Philippines — Amid an impending nationwide transport strike due to rising fuel costs, Malacañang on Friday asked the public for “understanding and trust” in the government’s efforts to balance the welfare of drivers and commuters.

Palace press officer Claire Castro made the statement in response to Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston) President Mody Floranda, who warned of a possible nationwide transport strike with other groups if the series of increases in petroleum product prices continues.

“At this time, what we need is unity and cooperation. President Marcos Jr. understands our concerns about the effects of the conflict in the Middle East.,” Castro said in a Viber message to reporters, reacting to Floranda.

“All we ask is for understanding and trust in the government’s decisions, which aim to balance helping commuters and supporting the transportation sector. We hope everyone works together amid the crisis in the Middle East,” she also said.

Castro stressed that the ongoing crisis is not the fault of Marcos or the government.

She said, “We all know that the President prioritized providing aid to the transportation sector, giving them financial assistance and fuel subsidies first.”

Piston staged what it described as a “successful” transport strike on Thursday to protest the oil price hike amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

The group demanded Marcos exercise his emergency powers to remove excise taxes on petroleum products.

The demonstration continued on Friday, with around 10,000 Piston members in Metro Manila and 70,000 nationwide expected to join.

On Wednesday, Marcos ordered the Department of Transportation to suspend the planned fare hike for public utility vehicles scheduled for March 19. He also vowed to provide free rides nationwide, as well as discounts on train fares and toll fees. /mr
