 Marcos discusses plan for waste-to-energy project during Japan visit


MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday met with executives of Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation and Phil. Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco) to discuss a proposed Waste-to-Energy (WtE) project for Manila.


Marcos is currently on the second day of his working visit to Osaka, Japan, where he is expected to attend the World Expo 2025, hold business meetings, and meet with the Filipino community.


 “I’m pleased to share that we are working with Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation on a landmark Waste-to-Energy project for Manila. This initiative will turn thousands of tons of waste into clean energy, reduce flooding, create jobs, and help clean up communities,” the President said in an Instagram post.


The meeting centered on Kanadevia Corporation’s investment plan for the WtE project in partnership with PhilEco—a key player in the design, construction, and management of integrated sanitary solid waste facilities in the Philippines.


 Kanadevia Corporation, meanwhile, is an Osaka-based company that specializes in environmental systems, including advanced WtE facilities, desalination plants, and water treatment technologies.


 Located in Smokey Mountain, Manila, the WtE project aims to sustainably overhaul Metro Manila’s waste disposal system by recovering energy on a large scale.


It will address several national priorities, including the improvement of Manila’s waste disposal system, power generation, foreign direct investment generation, employment creation, and environmental sustainability.



After their meeting, Marcos also held talks with executives of Japanese shipbuilder Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.


Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is entering the fifth phase of expansion at its shipyard in Balamban, Cebu, through investments in new capital equipment and the enhancement of its research and development capabilities. /jpv
